When it comes to a skincare routine in your 50s and 60s there is one buzzword: moisture. While you might have battled oily skin in your earlier years or had to contend with a patchy T-zone, the chances are now your skin struggles to stay hydrated. On top of that it’s likely some sagging has started to occur, but don’t worry there are steps which can be taken.
First up use a hydrating cleanser rather than one which is too abrasive and might strip skin of all moisture.
Next you’ll want to find a serum and moisturiser which will help tone down the ageing process. Look for products which contain peptides to plump and lift skin and retinol which can smooth lines, fade dark spots and make pores look smaller. Retinol is an over-the-counter form of retinoid, which unclogs pores and boosts collagen.
Alpha hydroxy acids are another good inclusion. They are found naturally in fruit like lemon and orange and promote exfoliation, meaning fine lines and pigmentation are improved.
Ideally you want a serum rich in peptides as it will boost collagen production and help skin look fuller. If it also contains hyaluronic acid that’s an added bonus, as this is a key ingredient when battling dry skin.
If you get a prescription cream containing retinoids it’s better to put on the face in the evening before bed and apply before a thick layer of moisturiser.
As with all ages sun protection is vital too, so don’t think about leaving the house unless you’ve slathered on at least an SPF 20 or higher. This shouldn’t be too tricky as most make-up ranges have it built in these days.
