Blahnik Will Be at NYFW

Isabella Blow: Fashion Galore! Exhibition Launch Party, Somerset House, London, Britain - 19 Nov 2013. Manolo Blahnik at the New York Fashion Week

Manolo Blahnik has joined the New York Fashion Week schedule.

The iconic shoe designer presented his latest line at the London leg of shows in September 2013, using a special movie to debut his footwear.

For Fall/Winter 14 he will be venturing across the pond to be part of the American schedule, something he is looking forward to.

“I want to share in detail how my mind and imagination work and where I get my inspiration from,” he told WWD. “New York is a very exciting city and I have a special sentiment towards it since it was the first place to make my shoes available to women outside of London.”

Manolo’s presentation will take place on Sunday February 9 between 11am and 2pm. His show will be staged at a gallery in Chelsea, but no further details about it are known at the moment.

Following his London debut last year, Manolo chatted about why he decided to be part of the schedule. He was surprised by how much work went into the plan, even though his presentation was just a five-minute plan. Nevertheless he was pleased to have made the decision and hinted it was only the first of many shows.

“I owed it to the organisers, I had been invited to take part so many times but it never felt right,” he told Vogue UK at the time. “London Fashion Week has changed so much recently, though; it is so professional now and I really think it is one of the most exciting in the world. Also, everything is becoming so transparent with all this technology, with the blogs and tweets, and I wanted to get more in touch with normal people.”

Next month’s New York Fashion Week has been the subject of intense speculation of late after many designers moaned it was becoming too commercial and crowded. There were claims it was less about true industry professionals and more about bloggers and fashion fans, with major stars such as Michael Kors and Vera Wang deciding against showing at the Lincoln Center this time around.

CFDA chairman Diane von Furstenberg is also moving her presentation, although she has insisted there is a special reason why – it’s the 40th anniversary of her iconic wrap dress.

“My decision is purely because of the anniversary year,” she told New York Times’ Cathy Horyn. “I want to do something special. I’m excited that they’re trying to get it together at Lincoln Center.”
