It’s all about laidback locks this spring and if you want to master this season’s ethereal trend, chunky plaits are the way to go.
That’s the advice from celebrity hairstylist extraordinaire Ken Picton.
“Plaits have been a fashion staple for women around the world for as long back as we can remember,” says Ken, who has groomed the locks of countless stars.
“From the Egyptians and the ancient Greeks, who wore them to signal their wealth and social status, they have well and truly stood the test of time.
“They come in many different shapes and sizes and they’re so versatile, from a quick fix to switch a haircut, to a bohemian bride or elaborate editorial fashion look.”
Chunky plaits have had a huge presence on the catwalks this season, with weighty twists working the Spring/Summer 14 shows from London to Milan.
From loose loops at Antonio Berardi to beachy undone side braids at Giles Deacon, plaits have once again been the buzz of the beauty world.
To create a show-stopping look, Ken says it’s important to create volume and texture, as this will give you the thickness you need.
“Prep the hair by doing a double blow dry,” he recommends.
“Blow dry as normal, re-apply your styling product and dry again, and to create texture use L’Oréal Beach Fizz on dry hair.
“Then work the plait loosely to the scalp and don’t worry about being too precise; this look is all about a soft, ethereal feel.
“Let strands fall loose for effortless style,” he adds
