Francisco Costa loved Rihanna’s “Clueless moment” on the red carpet last year.
The women’s creative director of Calvin Klein Collection has worked with a series of celebrities during his time with the label. Francisco has reminisced about his favourite moments dressing A-list stars and singled out seeing Rihanna in a simple red slip dress at the GQ Men of the Year Awards in 2012.
“I mean, how gorgeous?” he gushed to British magazine Grazia. “Calvin had done this kind of little dress for the film Clueless, and this was just a ‘Clueless moment’ again. It’s totally cool and easy. Nothing to it, and you’ve never seen Rihanna like that.”
Silver Linings Playbook star Jennifer Lawrence wore a red Calvin Klein dress for her first Oscars ceremony in 2011. This also provided a fond memory for Francisco.
“She was the first girl on the red carpet and I didn’t actually know who she was,” he recalled. “So there was an element of surprise. Her character [in The Hunger Games] is so tough and, all of a sudden, she rocks up in this dress and looked so sexy, so confident, so beautiful. At these awards you expect glitz, but instead she did this against all the odds.”
Francisco went on to describe the type of celebrity he likes to dress. He wants women to have the “confidence” to wear his red-carpet gowns, insisting he “deliberately” chooses certain stars to work with in order to expand the brand.
“They are strong, independent people,” Francisco explained. “They have a point of view. They’re feminine and cool. You know, they’re natural.”
