Donna Karan’s ‘punky’ show

Donna Karan New York 30th Anniversary - Runway - Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Fall 2014. Futuristic Make-up

Donna Karan went for “punky” mixed with “futuristic” make-up to show off its latest collection.

The fashion power house was celebrating 30 years in the industry, and had a star-studded front row at its New York Fashion Week show, including Rita Ora and Katie Holmes.

The designs featured sleek and sexy cuts, with chiffon revealing the models skin and low cut dresses with slashed hemlines.

Black was the prominent colour, as well as splashes of red and hints of mustard for the Fall/Winter 14 line.

“It feels a little bit punky, yet at the same time it’s got a futuristic element,” explained make-up artist Charlotte Tilbury of the looks she created, to

Heavy kohl eyeliner outlined the models’ eyes, which was smudged onto the lashes. Gunmetal shadow was painted onto the lids, to “pick up under the lights”.

Hats and headwear were also made use of, which were peaked and adorned with feathers.

They were created by milliner Stephen Jones, who took inspiration from old movies.

“They’re like the fifties biker caps that Marlon Brando wore in The Wild One, or like Charlotte Rampling in The Night Porter,” hair stylist Eugene Souleiman explained back stage.

Hair also mimicked the hats, and Eugene gave it the effect of “melting” using a lot of product to keep the rock hard style in place.

“The girls are loving us,” he laughed.

Following the success of the show, Donna Karan herself was delighted with her special anniversary catwalk.

“I was so clear in what I wanted to say. I wanted to show the strength of the woman. I wanted to show that after 30 years I think we stand for something that is absolutely, iconically Donna Karan,” she gushed to WWD.

“I wanted it to be a reflection of the past, and the present coming into the future. I wanted it to be about art, the city, the body, movement, the strength of tailoring, evening.”

Jenny Packham and Maison Martin Margiela will be among the designers showing today as New York Fashion Week continues.
