Diane von Furstenberg says her style has always been “effortless” and “sexy”.
The celebrated fashion designer recently marked a landmark occasion, when her famous wrap dress reached its 40th birthday. In honour of the iconic design an exhibition was thrown, titled Journey of a Dress.
Reflecting on her evolving style, Diane confesses that it hasn’t really changed.
“Looking back through the years my style has not changed. Effortless, sexy, on the go – that’s what I love and what DVF is all about,” Diane told grazia.co.uk.
The website then got the 67-year old designer to recall her favourite looks, and she gladly obliged by selecting her favourite photos form decades gone by.
Choosing a black and white snap from 1978, the designer can be seen lounging around on a sofa, nestled between two male companions. Wearing a sequined dress, her longs legs are on display in sheer black pantyhose.
“Me at Studio 54 in the late ’70s – legs are timeless!” she commented.
Next to a 1983 snap, which sees Diane dressed in a frumpy white shirt, she laughs, “This was my shoulder pad period – very ’80s, not great!”
Other classic looks that have been picked out included her wearing a lot of her own designs, which she remarks are all “timeless”.
A one-shouldered purple dress matched with gold jewellery gives a screen shot into fashion during 1987. More recent photos included the Met Ball in 2005 and the Vanity Fair Oscars party two years later.
The last photo shows a glowing Diane with her granddaughter at the Journey of a Dress opening. She can be seen beaming in the photo, wearing a floor-length black design. Her granddaughter is sporting one of the famous wrap dresses in black, white, yellow and pink.
“Here I am at the opening party for my Journey of a Dress exhibition in L.A. with my granddaughter Talita. A new generation of wrappers! Timeless,” she laughed.
