‘Tis the season to be jolly and what better way to show your seasonal spirit than with glittery nails? We think embracing your inner sparkle is the perfect way to prepare for the coming onslaught of festive parties. With Christmas just around the corner, we have tried and tested a range of nail varnishes to ensure you stand out from the crowd this Yuletide. And never fear, if full blown disco diva glitter is too much, there are other lacquers around to give you a more subtle seasonal shimmer.
Katie Jane Hughes, butter LONDON Global Colour Ambassador, agrees with us that twinkling nails are the top beauty look for the festive season. “Something with glitter for sure this Christmas, maybe ombre, very glam and effortless,” she told Cover Media.
So read on as we reveal who has been naughty and nice when it comes to glitter nail varnishes.
Zoya’s Zenith Collection in Payton – 4.5 out of 5
This is perfect for anyone looking for an understated glint. Rather than full on glitter, the polish offers a dark cranberry jelly-like base with a scattered holographic to create a twinkling effect. The vampy colour looked stunning after two coats and the subtle sparkle of micro-glitter made for a more glamorous and grown-up take on the glitter trend. I found the product lasted well, and only showed a few small chips after I had been wearing it for two days.
Revlon Moon Candy in Orbit – 3/5
The colour of this is right up my street. It comes in a double ended tube, with a deep purple which is put on first and a pale pink glittery top coat to add afterwards. The colour is pretty and in theory I loved this, but it was quite hard to apply. The purple came out well and dried quickly, but I found the glitter varnish gloopy. There are also thick chunks of shimmer in it which aren’t that easy to spread. It means you need quite a few coats to get your whole nail shimmering, by which time the polish looks lumpy. The idea is there, but I’d like it to look a little sleeker on the nail.
Mavala Jewel Collection in Moonstone – 3.5/5
This is the company’s new festive line, all of which contain refined glitter for a multifaceted finish. There are six shades including gold and red but I went for a lilac version which is shot through with silver. Top marks for drying time with these, in just a couple of minutes you are good to go. They also provide great coverage, so two coats is more than enough – you could probably get away with one. The finish was almost matte which I also liked, but unfortunately the polish chipped quite quickly. After a night out we had big patches missing, but it wouldn’t put us off using them for a festive party.
Topshop Nails in Magpie – 4 out of 5
This nail varnish dried really quickly and you can apply as many layers as you want depending on how much glitter is required. I used two coats of the lacquer, which has big and small bits of silvery-gold glitter, to create a pretty and even sparkle. It would also work well if you wanted to apply it over another colour – such as a silver or gold polish for a more dramatic effect. If you want to maximise its staying power, finish off with a glossy topcoat.
