Finding your perfect eyeshadow palette can be as tricky as finding Mr Right. Some people stick with the same hues for years, while others are always eager to experiment with the latest arrival. This week as part of our Hero Products series, we have sifted through the wide variety of palettes currently on offer and chosen our favourites.
Read on to find something for every occasion and mood. And we promise there isn’t a dud in sight – when it comes to great colours, these are all killer and no filler.
Best for a glitzy night out – Bobbi Brown Old Hollywood Eye Palette
If you are still searching for the perfect palette to satisfy all your make-up needs during the festive season, then look no further. “The new rule in holiday make-up – it’s about what makes you feel glamorous,” says Bobbi Brown, and we certainly agree.
This collection will help you emulate iconic screen sirens, with glimmering golds, a soft silver sparkle and rich chocolate brown on offer. There are also a nice choice of neutral shades and a black eyedshadow, so you can heighten the drama with a smoky eye or keep it natural for everyday. Housed in a smart black compact with an impressive mirror, dual ended brush and nine fabulous shades, it certainly won’t disappoint if you add it to your Christmas wish list.
Best for everyday – Clinique All About Shadow Quads
This is a great option if you prefer to wear the same shades daily. There are eight different versions, with each palette offering four complementary colours. For those looking for neutral brown and beige shades, we would recommend Teddy Bear or for something smokier, go for Jenna’s Essentials. Anyone searching for blues and greens can’t go wrong with On Safari, Smoke and Mirrors or Galaxy. These palettes contain two sponge-tip applicators and the colours are so hardworking they won’t crease or fade, ensuring your eyes stand out all day.
Best for smokey eyes – Topshop Constellation Eye Palette
This quad is competitively priced and works a treat, offering you all you need to create the perfect smoky eye look as well as a mirror and applicator. We love the packaging for this product, with the eyeshadows housed in a fun black compact with white spots.
Sometimes darker hues such as black fail to deliver in terms of impact, but this certainly doesn’t disappoint. As well as a sparkling dark hue, it also boasts a striking aubergine with silver glitter, warm peach and pale silver – so you could use the colours in several different ways if you want a more natural daytime look.
Best for metallics – Cargo, Let’s Meet in Paris
This palette contains 12 highly-pigmented metallic shades which blend easily and don’t suffer from fallout when applied. Giving the colours French names in keeping with the title of the palette is a nice touch and our favourites have to be the shimmering black Beret and golden toned brown Bonjour. One of the best things about these shadows is you don’t need to use much to get a good colour as they are so well pigmented, plus they blend like a dream.
Best for shimmer – Too Faced, The Return of Sexy
If you lust after everything sparkly, then look no further. This palette contains 15 shades and while there are a few mattes thrown in, the heavy hitters are the sparkly colours. There is a section of four nude tones including gold, bronze and dark brown shimmers, a black portion for the perfect sparkly smoky eye and four harmonising purple shiny shades. Don’t be fooled into thinking you need to stick to the sections though – you can cross blend for a beautiful finish, particularly if you use the purple and grey tones together. The primer, which comes with the palette, will keep your look in place all day and night too.
Best new – Urban Decay, Naked 3
With the first two versions in the franchise doing so well it stands to reason that Urban Decay would bring out a new instalment, but still no one could quite believe the whispers when they started last month. Well they are true and we’d go so far as to say this is the prettiest and most wearable Naked palette yet. It boast 12 completely new colours all of which have a rose hue, with the inspiration being a photo taken just as the sun was setting. There are light shimmers for highlighting, mid tones for day wear and darker colours for blending into the crease at night. Standouts for us are pinky taupe Buzzed, bronze Liar and Blackheart, which is a deep brown shot through with red shimmer.
