Hero Products Foundations Picking Right Base Foundations

Picking the right base can be a daunting process, so we’ve done the hard work for you and rounded up our top foundation picks.

The biggest piece of advice to take on board is not to be swayed by the so-called ‘in’ products. Magazines might be filled with stories of new foundations to achieve the barely-there look, but if you prefer full coverage then stick with it. Similarly BB and CC creams are great for some complaints but don’t sit well on all complexions, so once you find your perfect fit stay loyal to it and experiment with other areas of you make-up instead.

Best BB Cream – Garnier BB Cream Miracle Skin Perfector

Beauty or Blemish Balm is billed as an all-in-one product which offers skin care properties as well as sheer coverage. Picking the right one should see you with a more even skin tone, illuminated complexion and with imperfections hidden.

Garnier’s was one of the first mainstream versions made available and was an instant success, even picking up beauty awards. It covers redness and dark circles and is a hit with us because as well as coming in several colours there are also versions for anti-ageing, combination and sensitive skin.

Best CC Cream – Max Factor CC Cream

These are the next generation of BB creams which provide many of the same skincare benefits but with extra hydration and more coverage. If you worry about uneven skin tone, dark spots or want something light then these are the products for you. They also make skin look smoother, so are a great choice for those worried about fine lines.

Having tried many CC creams we’ve found a lot have an orange undertone and completely get rid of any shadow on your face, which looks unnatural. This version gave great coverage without appearing mask like and best of all lasted all day.

Best Tinted Moisturiser – NARS Pure Radiant Tinted Moisturiser

Many women don’t get the point of these products, not least because there can be something a little ’80s about the thought of them. It’s true they won’t cover really dark circles or spots, but pick a good one and your skin will glow with health.

Our favourite by a long shot is NARS Pure Radiant Tinted Moisturiser. It glides on easily, provides a decent amount of coverage and instantly makes the face look healthier. It’s a great substitute for your full eight hours of sleep during party season.

Best long lasting – MAC Pro Longwear SPF 10 Foundation

MAC have succeeded in creating a foundation that really lasts the distance. The Pro Longwear SPF 10 Foundation won’t fade even when temperatures plummet or soar. This formula offers a flawless finish for an impressive 15 hours, so you don’t need to worry about uneven skin tone throughout the day. Despite its heavy coverage, it feels lightweight and is easy to blend into your skin. The product also works hard to keep oil levels under check, and boasts micronized pigments to give a flawless finish.

Best for Anti-Ageing – Dr Lewinn’s Skin Perfect Anti-Ageing Foundation

In this day and age beauty lovers want more from their products and why shouldn’t they? If you need a base which will also do your skin some good go for this Dr Lewinn’s version, which came out this year. It contains rose stem cells to stimulate skin, matrixyl synthe’6 to enhance collagen and tourmaline for radiance. It promises to improve the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles while hydrating and we can attest that it does the job. It’s also buildable, so good whether you like medium or full coverage.

Best all round – Chanel Vitalumière Satin Smoothing Fluid Makeup

Chanel really comes up trumps with this number, which helps revive tired skin. It has SPF 15 and is blendable, plus it doesn’t feel cakey on the face. Your complexion will look natural and radiant, with luminosity restored.
