Kate Upton insists fashion fails can be “fun”.
While most models strive to look immaculate at all times, the 21-year-old likes to take style risks. They don’t always work out, but she claims that is all part of the learning process.
“What’s great about the red carpet is that you get the opportunity to experiment with different fashion moments. Even if they’re not so successful, it’s fun to see different styles on your body,” she told vogue.com.au.
Kate thinks most people run into problems with their dress sense when they try to be something they aren’t. While she has come a long way from the bikini and flip-flops she was usually seen in as a teenager in Florida, she knows the shapes that suit her best. The model calls her style “sophisticated” and cites Oscar de la Renta, Louis Vuitton and Ralph Lauren as some of her favourite fashion houses.
Having graced the covers of magazines such as US Vogue and Sports Illustrated, Kate is at the top of her game at the moment. In 2014 she plans to take some time to consider what she’s achieved, something she didn’t pay much attention to until a discussion with her mother recently.
“I’ve worked incredibly hard to get to this position. My mom actually told me last year that with all my success and the opportunities that I have come my way, I need to look up and enjoy what I have accomplished and not just keep moving forward,” she explained.
“You can get caught up and keep going further and further and keep pushing yourself. I really needed to hear that so that I enjoy the moment and what I’ve accomplished. If I could tell something to my younger self, it would be to enjoy the climb.”
Although she’s doing well career-wise, Kate gets attacks of the nerves before photoshoots. She enlists the help of her personal trainer to help her work off her anxiety but insists worrying about campaigns is a good thing as it shows how much she still cares.
