Lulu Guinness is proud her designs help people though “horrible” moments.
The British fashionista founded her own brand when she was 29 and her items are sold across the globe.
With bags ranging from clutches to luggage, and accessories such as jewellery and umbrellas, Lulu is glad her designs appeal to a mass audience. It gives her great pleasure knowing her fans rely on her fashion house to make them feel better.
“Last week, I was in a restaurant and saw a lady with one of my purses. She’d just been given it for her birthday and she came up and told me how much it meant to her,” Lulu recalled to the January edition of British magazine Cosmopolitan. “That’s when it hits you, those random moments. I get the most amazing letters from people going through horrible things – from cancer to divorce – who tell me our bags make them feel good. That’s unexpected, and it feels incredible.”
Lulu’s eponymous label celebrates its 25th birthday next year. The quirky designer finds it hard to believe the brand has been going for so long and is already planning ahead to keep it successful for the foreseeable future.
“It’s a huge deal to reach this point. I can’t help but think, ‘Wow,’” she smiled. “One of the reasons I became a designer is to embrace change – I love the way fashion evolves. It makes me excited about the future. There’s a lot to look forward to.”
