US First Lady Michelle Obama is tweaking her workouts so she doesn’t “fall and break a hip one day”.

Michelle will celebrate her 50th birthday on January 17 and has discussed how her age affects her exercise routine. The star is known for her dedication to keeping in shape, but in recent months she has begun thinking about things other than staying slim.

She told People magazine these days her workouts are about balance and flexibility “so that I’m not falling and breaking a hip one day”.

Keeping fit has always been important to Michelle, who last year launched the Let’s Move! Active Schools initiative to encourage more physical exertion for children as they are learning.

Much has also been made of the First Lady’s dedication to arm routines, with her toned limbs the envy of many. While she will still be ensuring her body is tight, Michelle is enjoying testing out other ways of exercising.

“I’m seeing myself shift from weight-bearing stuff – even though that continues to be important – and the heavy cardio and running, to things like yoga that will keep me flexible,” she explained.

The star also touches on diet in the interview, revealing she tries not to deny herself foods but is big on munching fruit and vegetables.

She was also asked her opinion on the ageing process and refused to rule out plastic surgery. While she can’t imagine going under the knife at the moment, Michelle has a “never say never” attitude to most things in life. She also believes women should be able to do whatever they want to help them feel confident about their appearance.
