Mindy Kaling has defended her Elle magazine cover, joking people should date her if they want to see “more” of her body.
The comedy actress appears on the front of the American publication for its Women in TV issue. Other female small-screen stars who were given a cover for the special editions were Amy Poehler, Zooey Deschanel and Allison Williams.
While the other actresses’ figures are in full view in their photos, Mindy’s black and white snap shows her from her shoulders up only with her long dark hair pulled over her right shoulder.
People have since hit out at Elle for purposely cutting out Mindy’s body, comparing their decision to that of Melissa McCarthy’s coat cover for the publication’s Women in Hollywood issue last October.
However the 34-year-old actress has hit back at critics and insists she is pleased with the finished piece.
“I love my @ELLEmagazine cover. It made me feel glamorous & cool. And if anyone wants to see more of my body, go on thirteen dates with me,” she wrote on Twitter.
Elle have agreed with Mindy’s comments. Staff too defended their chosen pose for the star.
“Mindy looks sexy, beautiful and chic. We think it is a striking and sophisticated cover and are thrilled to celebrate her in our Women in TV Issue,” Elle wrote in a statement to E! News.
Mindy has never been shy when talking about her body image. In her humorous memoir, Is Everybody Hanging Out Without Me?, she gives her opinion on her figure.
“I fall into that nebulous, quote-unquote, normal American woman size that legions of fashion stylists detest. For the record, I’m a size 8 – this week, anyway,” she writes.
“Many stylists hate that size because I think to them, it shows that I lack the discipline to be an ascetic; or the confident, sassy abandon to be a total fatty hedonist.”
