It seems like everyone is on a mission to find their perfect red lipstick. We want a failsafe rouge in our make-up bag to perk us up after a long day or to help us ooze Old Hollywood glamour for a hot date. With Christmas fast approaching, there is no time like the present to hunt down your must-have red lipstick so your pout looks suitably festive. However, there are plenty of things to consider before making that all-important purchase – does it suit my skin tone? Will it last all night or slip and crack? Will it dry or stain my lips?
We have found several worthy candidates for you to consider, so read on for our tried and tested adventure into the world of sexy scarlet smiles.
Topshop Lips in Rio Rio – 5/5
First of all, the packaging is worth a mention. This lipstick really stands out with its distinctive white case with grey stripes. I don’t usually wear matte finish lipsticks, but this looked great on and had impressive staying power. It also lived up to its promise to moisturise the mouth as my lips weren’t left feeling dry once I applied it.
This is a good everyday option for anyone who finds lipstick can dehydrate their lips. I found wearing lip gloss over the product helped to ramp up the look in the evening.
NARS Red Lizard – 4/5
This is in NARS’ semi-matte range and so completely on-trend for Autumn/Winter 13. The pigment is strong but be warned this shade isn’t for shrinking violets – we’re heading towards oxblood territory with this number. It slicks on well and lasted through tea drinking and cereal eating without needing to be reapplied. The lipstick also didn’t bleed or stick to teeth, two of our biggest bugbears. It would have got top marks, but after a ten-hour day our lips felt drier than usual.
Bobbi Brown Old Hollywood Lip Color – 4/5
I was promised a pout worthy of a leading lady with this product and I certainly wasn’t disappointed. It was easy to apply evenly and lasted for a reasonable amount of time. The elegant gold case is very glamorous and the lipstick felt luxurious and decadent to wear. This limited edition lippy is a medium, cool retro red and the perfect addition to your make-up bag for a glitzy Christmas party.
Maybelline’s Superstay 14 Hour lipstick in Ravishing Rouge – 4.5/5
I wore this lipstick during a weekend in Paris, in a bid to match the chicness of the local ladies. This super rich colour lasted throughout the day, withstanding even the challenge of constant coffee and croissant pit stops. Even though my pout often feels parched, this didn’t dry my lips out or feel caked on. Although it didn’t last 14 hours, it certainly left a lasting impression on me as the colour was fantastic.
MAC Cremesheen Glass in Prepare for Please – 3.5/5
This is somewhere between a gloss and a lipstick, shiny but not too sticky and perfect for a festive injection to lips. It is part of the company’s Divine Night Holiday Colour Collection and is a bold pinky-red. The colour gets top marks from us as does the sheen, which makes lips look full and luscious. Unfortunately the lasting power isn’t there, so after and food or drink, reapplication is needed. That said – it fades across the whole mouth, so there is no unsightly lip outline moment. This comes into its own when layered over a darker lipstick, which is probably the best way to wear it.
