What are wrinkles?

The Australasian Society of Cosmetic Physicians says that Wrinkles begin as fine depressions in the skin surface. They are initially “dynamic”, only present with movement, and later become “static”, also present at rest. With more time and sun exposure they can become “fibrosed”, also present when the skin is stretched.

Excessive sun and environmental damage may also lead to other wrinkles which are not movement-related.

Types of Wrinkles

Some typical types of wrinkles include:

Crow’s Feet – wrinkles at the corners of the eyes
Frown Lines – wrinkles between the eyebrows
Forehead Lines – wrinkles in the forehead, usually horizontal
Smile Lines/Nasolabial Lines – wrinkles from the side of the nose past the corner of the mouth
Sleep Lines – wrinkles almost perpendicular to crow’s feet, forehead lines and adjacent to the nose
Bunny Lines – wrinkles due to nose scrunching
Chin Lines – horizontal creases above the chin
Smoker’s Lines – vertical lines around the mouth due to a pursing action

There are two basic types of facial wrinkles – static and dynamic.

Dynamic wrinkles are created by the movement of facial muscles which produce creasing in the skin. By reducing or stopping the action of these muscles, dynamic lines will soften or even disappear.

Types of treatments for wrinkles

The most-commonly treated areas are the frown (between the eyebrows), the crows’ feet and forehead but many other areas may be treated in suitable individuals such as lines around the lips, chin corrugations and the nose.

Face shape can also be changed slightly by relaxing the muscle which overlies the back part of the jaw in those who dislike a “square-jawed” appearance and eyebrows may be raised, lowered or changed in shape somewhat, by selective treatment of the raising and lowering muscles of the eyebrows.
