Wang shares bridal rules

Vera Wang says brides can break the rules with their dresses – within reason.

The wedding gown designer enjoys offering fresh takes on the traditional garment, having presented black and pink collections in the past. Although she’s always up for creating something new, Vera warns there are key facts which need to be taken into account when picking an outfit for your big day.

“I think that it’s always important and I always say the W’s. So where, when and what time of day. I don’t mean that you can’t break rules but I think you have to know what you’re doing before you shop,” she told vogue.com.au. “And I always have the people who work for me to ask the bride tremendous questions like: what time of day? Is it going to be a morning wedding, is it going to be at city hall and with a very chic lunch?”

The designer explained that what women want to wear for an “afternoon tea ball” will be very different to the dress chosen for an evening event. Those who opt for a beach wedding will have a different set of requirements to those who will tie the knot in the country club.

Although Vera will always take a women’s shape and fashion sense into account when advising her on what to go for, she insists the venue and plans for the day are really the most important thing.

“All of these things need to be taken into consideration. Until you know all of that, you can’t really advise someone really well,” she claimed. “You can definitely start to work on the body type and the shape of a bride and what is most becoming on her. In order to get very much more productive you have to be more specific.”
