Zooey Deschanel’s mother made her a “Dorothy” dress when she was two.
The New Girl star is famed for her cute vintage style and has inspired many of her fans to invest in girly retro frocks.
Her love of fashion started from a young age and the 34-year-old can still clearly remember the first treasured item in her wardrobe.
“I remember every article of clothing I own. I remember where I bought it, how much it costs and when I bought it… I have kind of a weird photographic memory when it comes to clothes,” she smiled on a behind-the-scenes photoshoot for her Lucky magazine cover.
“I have this little dress my mom made me when I was two years old – that was my Dorothy dress, because I loved Dorothy from The Wizard of Oz. It’s just this blue and white dress with puff sleeves. It means a lot to me.”
Zooey looks gorgeous on the magazine’s cover, wearing a checked blue and white top by Derek Lam, which she says she “loves”.
In the clip from the shoot, Zooey can also be seen in a navy Michael Kors dress with white beading, which she describes as “beautiful”.
In New Girl, the actress’ character Jess wears some cute girly outfits and Zooey has a lot of input when it comes to picking clothes for the show.
“Deb McGuire, who is the costume designer, and I have a great collaborative relationship about what Jess wears,” she explained.
“It’s kind of just a mix of what looks good on my body, what works for the character and what works in the general landscape of the show. Those things come together and make up Jess’ look.”
