There’s nothing more frustrating than taking the time and having the patience to paint your nails, only for them to chip almost immediately and undo all your hard work.

So we’re here to give you the top five tips on how to take care of your talons and make your manicure last longer.

1) Dehydrate your nail.

Before you even consider putting polish on your nails, you need to make sure they are primed, ready to take your chosen colour. Even before you apply a base coat, make sure you dehydrate your nail.

By that we mean make sure there is no sign of any residue such as water, moisturiser or oil on your nails because if there is, it will prevent the polish from holding on to your nail bed. Before applying polish, wipe your nails with lint-free cotton pads and an acetone-based cleanser.

2) Choose the right base coat.

Base coats help hold the polish in place and the general rule with them is the stickier the finish, the better. That’s because if it’s still a little bit sticky to the touch it means it will grip the polish better.

3) Cover your ‘free edge’.

We’re sure you’ll have seen beauticians flick the brush over the edge of your nail when you’ve had a manicure done professionally. That’s because they are sealing the ‘free edge’; the part of the nail that’s been clipped or filed. By doing so you can potentially double the life of your manicure, as you will be protecting your nail from water damage, which can be a big cause of chipping.

4) Don’t forget your top coat.

Top coats do what they say on the bottle, top off your nail polish, usually giving it an extra boost of shine and gloss but also helping protect the colour underneath from chips, smudges and scratches.

5) Oil your nails daily.

To prevent peeling and splitting of your polish, you need to keep your nails moisturised and one of the easiest ways to do this is to apply a nail and cuticle oil on a daily basis. Unlike traditional lotions and moisturizers, which often have alcohol and perfumes in them, nail oils are formulated with ingredients such as vitamin E and jojoba oil that can penetrate deep into the nail.
